The Tower is back with a new power supply. I pulled the cover to check things out before plugging it in. They replaced the fuse holder which was good. There were a couple of loose wire going to the controllers. I had to insert them and tighted them down. No big deal BUT they should have checked that!

I installed 4 fuses between the power supply source and VCC+ on each controller. I used 3.5 Amp like you advised. All is working good now. Nice and neat and cleaned up.

Now to learn how to set soft limits and home position in the software. Lots to learn but out of town again Sunday. Will be back Wednesday for a while. Maybe I can get some stuff done then.

One really cool thing I saw was a Picture converted to GCode for a Litho then wrapped with CNCWrapper and cut into a cylinder of Litho material. It was then placed over a candle. It looked quite cool! Just like a flat litho on a CW but wrapped.. Maybe sometime in the distant future!

I have to glue up some stock tomorrow so I can start carving again!

Let's hear your progress!

Well my posts here are far and few between, but going thru my favorites today, thought I'd drop in,

to: Pratyeka, Your cnc is just awsome!!! all aluminum construction, nice !!, should cut well, and zippy, too bad to hear about the 2 smoked Probotix drives, ( don't say I did'nt warn you about using those drivers ! )

to: Donnie Your machine is really taking shape, I am partial to the Rockcliff design as I built and use the exact same one, still going strong, I really like your paint job, I have to paint/seal mine one of these days soon, I do not have dust collection, and usually wheel it outside to cut, it almost got totalled last week when it started to rain, oops.

Anyway, good luck with your homebuilt's happy building and cutting , here's a photo of my rockcliff D model, mostly used as a cnc, but sometimes a workbench too.

specs:
36x24 rockcliff D (a few mods) made from 3/4 mdf
3/8-10 acme
dumpster nuts and couplings
rockcliff 4 axis driver / ps ( still just slaped on to a pc of wood, with no fan, no box, a disaster just waiting to happen)
4 rockcliff 270 motors with the y axis slaved to a axis

Well,
I received my CNC from Legacy. It had NOT been a good trip so far.

1 - The fuse holder in the Power Cabinet was broken and the nut on the back was cross threaded.

2 - The Router Mount was missing.

3 - A X-Axis mount (1 of 2) was missing. It is a square place with a 1/4-20 x 3/4 Head screw.

4 - Conversational CAM software not shipped.

I cannot get the steppers to move at all. All of the controllers have red lights and the parallel interface has power. I try to manually jog and no good.

I ran the Test Driver and it ran OK. Something is screwy though and the manual is of no good. It is a assembly manual not an operators manual.

I called Legacy and was asked to call back in 20 Minutes. I finally received a call after 1+ hours. The salesman says that he will have to take care of me on his own time and he to work on sales. I thought I was a sale?!? A technician is supposed to call me at 4 Pm my time. It seems they have a Video to edit.

What ya think? Should I be nervous?

Well, I've started my build using the Rockcliff plans. I'm doing to build the Model D exactly as specified in the plans. I've got all the components cut using MDF except for the X axis side plates. I've cut the angle alum for the runner blocks and will be getting the bearings tomorrow.

I need some advice...

If you have seen the plans, they give you 3 different choices for the nuts on the runner blocks. How much difference will I see if I use the nylon nuts instead of the antibacklash nuts?

Should I go with the threaded lead screws I can get at Home Depot or pop for the more expensive Acme screws?

Software:

Mach3 is the choice I presume? Tell us some of the gory details..

GCode.. Is there a GCode Generator?
Is Mach3 the control software for the machine?
How difficult is GCode to program?
Can GCode do carvings like the CW?
If a 4th axis is built and installed can the software handle it without upgrading?
What are the approximate costs of the software?

Lets get educated here guys! :-)

I've purchased the Rockcliff plans. They look very straight forward and simple. I am concentrating on the 'D' model of these plans. It can be built at 24"x - 36"y - 5"z.

I am also looking hard at the Solsylva plans for their 24" x 48" machine. This build seems to concentrate on using commonly available dimensioned wood and off the shelf parts.

Other than the size differences, I'm at a loss which way to go. Any suggestions?

The JoesCNC 4X4 Hybrid was highly recommended by the Legacy group on Google. I fact the mod there was very adminant that it was a bad move to buy a Legacy when the Joes was available. Here is the link:

JoesCNC Link

The thing that I do not like is you have to buy the plans for $100.00 to get acess to the forums. Otherwise the feedback on it is very good. There are modifications for a 4th axis as well!

I was so into the CW forums here I just found out about these discussions! I have been looking to do exactly what you guys are talking about and I didn't even know it!

I'll start looking up the machines you are talking about.
BTW: The kit for the Joes is listed on the site as well.

Yeah, I have been reading up on DIY CNC routers for the past 4 days and found out quite a bit of information out there, plans, kits, software...
Bought a drawing package for $20 at www.rockcliffmachine.com. and planning to build a 24" X 48" moving gantry 4 axis machine. Total cost should come around $600 - $800, depending on leadscrew quality.
Since I have been fixing and programming CNC machine for the electronic assembly industry, I realize now I should have gone this way first before dumping $3000 into the CW, for that much money I could have made 3 real CNC routers, not just a hobby machine.

I like the CW for what it does, but I realise now that it wont last, too many plastic parts, stepper motors too small, less than desirable precision.. It still can make nice stuff, but for reliability and precision it just won't cut it. So when I get my first DIY CNC router up and going, I might just sell my CW. I don't have enough room in my garage for 2 CNC and all the wood machines and saws I have....

Keep checking my blog, I will document this adventure. I have started ordering parts, the bearings for the slides. This weekend I will start cutting some of the parts for the gantry and the slides. The frame is made with 3/4" MDF. The stuff I make and sell with the CW should help paying for the new toy.
